Storage Unit Cleanouts: How to Stop Paying Rent on Things You Forgot

There is a specific phone call we take a few times a month. Someone has been paying for a storage unit for years, they cannot remember most of what is in it, and they have finally decided to deal with it.

Almost always, the thing that tipped them over was doing the arithmetic.

The arithmetic

A modest unit in Broward runs somewhere around $120 to $250 a month depending on size and climate control. Call it $180.

Over five years, that is close to eleven thousand dollars.

Now ask what is actually inside. For most units it is furniture from a previous home, boxes packed during a move, holiday decorations, some kids' things, and a category most people describe as "stuff I would have to look through."

Almost nobody's storage unit contains eleven thousand dollars of value. Most contain a few genuinely worth keeping items surrounded by things that were easier to store than to decide about.

That is not a criticism — storage units are sold precisely as a way to defer a decision, and they are very good at it. But the deferral has a running meter.

Before you clear it: three things to check

Documents. Boxes packed during a move often contain paperwork nobody meant to store — deeds, titles, tax records, birth certificates. Open anything box-shaped and paper-filled before it goes.

Anything sentimental. Photographs especially. In a non-climate-controlled Florida unit they may have suffered, but they are still irreplaceable and worth checking for.

The lease terms. Give notice properly and confirm the date the unit needs to be empty. Facilities usually want it cleared and swept by a specific day, and some bill another full month if you overrun.

What Florida heat does to a storage unit

Worth setting expectations, because it changes what is worth keeping.

A non-climate-controlled unit in Broward gets brutally hot. Over several years:

• Upholstered furniture holds moisture and can develop mould through the padding
• Cardboard softens and collapses, particularly at the base of a stack
• Adhesives fail — veneer lifts, particle-board furniture comes apart
• Photographs and printed material stick together or curl
• Candles, vinyl records and anything wax or plastic deform
• Electronics suffer from repeated heat cycling and humidity

Solid wood furniture, metal, ceramics and tools generally survive well. That is a useful rule of thumb before you drive over expecting to save a sofa.

How the cleanout runs

Simpler than a house, because everything is already in one room with truck access.

We meet you at the unit — bring the gate code, or arrange access with the facility. We walk it with you, separate anything you are keeping or want to look through, and give you a firm price for the rest before anything moves.

Then it comes out. A typical single unit is somewhere between a quarter and a half truckload, which puts most of them in the $150 to $400 range. Larger units, or ones packed to the roof, go higher and get quoted on the day.

We sweep it out afterwards, because most facilities require the unit broom clean before they will close the account.

The bit people find hardest

It is rarely the logistics. It is standing in front of things you have been paying to avoid deciding about.

The frame that helps most: you are not deciding whether these things ever mattered. You are deciding whether they are worth another $180 a month. Those are very different questions, and the second one is much easier to answer honestly.
