We are going to start this one by talking you out of hiring us, at least some of the time.
The City of Coral Springs provides bulk trash and vegetative waste collection for single-family homes. It is included in what you already pay. If your situation fits inside its rules, it is genuinely the right answer and you should use it. We are not going to pretend otherwise to win a $99 job.
What follows is where it works, where it does not, and the items that catch people out.
When bulk pickup is the right call
Use the city service if all of the following are true:
- You live in a single-family home that qualifies for the service.
- You can get the items to the curb yourself.
- You are happy for them to sit at the curb until the scheduled collection.
- Nothing in the pile is on the restricted list.
- You are not up against a deadline.
One old dresser, a bagged-up pile of hedge trimmings, a broken patio chair — put it out, wait for the truck, keep your money. That is a perfectly good outcome and we would tell a neighbour the same thing.
Where it stops working
Four things push people from bulk pickup to calling us, and it is almost always one of these rather than cost.
1. You cannot get it to the curb
This is the big one, and it is not a small detail. Bulk collection starts at your curb. Everything before that is your problem — down the stairs, out of the attic, through the side gate, across the lawn.
A sleeper sofa weighs a genuinely dangerous amount. So does a treadmill, a gun safe, a chest freezer, or a solid wood armoire your grandmother owned. Every year people hurt their backs doing this to save a couple of hundred dollars, and it is a bad trade.
If you can carry it out, use the city. If you would be recruiting two friends and a hand truck, call somebody who does it for a living.
2. There is a deadline
Collection runs on a schedule. That is fine when you are decluttering at your own pace. It is not fine when there is a closing on Thursday, a tenant moving in on Monday, or an inspection booked.
This is the single most common reason realtors and landlords call us. Not because they cannot use the city service — because the calendar does not care about the collection schedule.
3. It is on the restricted list
Here is where most people get caught. Municipal bulk programs across Broward have limits, and the following commonly cannot go out with bulk trash:
- Refrigerators, freezers and AC units — refrigerant has to be recovered by a licensed processor first.
- Construction and renovation debris — drywall, tile, lumber, concrete. Bulk trash is for household items, not the results of a bathroom remodel.
- Hazardous material — paint, chemicals, solvents, motor oil, propane tanks.
- Tyres and vehicle parts.
- Anything over the volume limit for a single collection.
The renovation debris one surprises people constantly. You pay a contractor to rip out a bathroom, the debris goes on the driveway, and then you find out it is not household bulk waste and it is staying there.
4. The volume is genuinely large
A whole-house cleanout, a full garage, an estate — that is not a bulk pickup, that is several of them, spread over weeks, with an increasingly unhappy street. HOA communities in particular will lose patience quickly with a pile that lives at the curb for a fortnight.
The HOA factor
Worth saying plainly, because Coral Springs has a lot of them: many HOA communities have rules about how long items can sit at the curb and when they can be put out. Check yours before you stage a large pile. We have been called out more than once specifically to clear something that had already earned somebody a letter.
What hiring us actually buys you
