We get a fair number of calls that start with someone describing a bad experience with another company. Almost every one of them traces back to a question nobody thought to ask up front.

So here are the seven, along with what a straight answer sounds like — and what should make you keep dialling.

1. How do you price the job?

Good answer: "By volume — how much room your load takes in the truck." Or hourly, stated clearly. Either is defensible as long as they say which.

Bad answer: anything vague. "Depends" is not pricing. If a company will not explain the mechanism before arriving, you have no way to sanity-check the number when it comes.

For what it is worth, we price by volume specifically because hourly punishes you for things you do not control. A narrow staircase is not more junk.

2. When exactly do I get a firm price?

Good answer: before anything is loaded, in writing, after they have seen the actual pile.

Bad answer: after the truck is loaded. This is the single biggest red flag in the whole industry. Once your garage is half empty and their truck is half full, your negotiating position is gone. That is not an accident when a company works that way.

Ask directly: "If I do not like the price, what happens?" The answer should be that they leave and you owe nothing.

3. Are you licensed and insured — and can I see it?

Good answer: yes, and here it is.

This matters more than people assume. A crew is carrying heavy objects through your doorways and down your stairs. If someone is hurt on your property, or your banister gets destroyed, uninsured means it becomes your problem. Homeowner's policies are not written with an uninsured hauler in mind.

Asking is not rude. Anyone legitimate expects it.

4. What can't you take?

Good answer: a short, specific list — asbestos, medical waste, explosives. Things that genuinely require licensed handling.

Watch for: a very long list. Some companies refuse anything awkward — mattresses, tires, paint, appliances — because those cost more to dispose of. You will find that out on the day, with the awkward things still sitting in your garage.

We take what regular waste management turns down. That is most of the reason people call us.

5. Where does it actually go?

Good answer: a description of sorting. Donations here, metal there, e-waste separately, the rest disposed of.

Bad answer: "we recycle everything." Nobody recycles everything. That is a marketing line, and a company willing to say it is willing to say other things.

If it matters to you where your parents' furniture ends up, ask, and expect a specific answer.

6. Is the price all-in?

Ask explicitly whether the number includes labour, disposal fees, fuel and stairs. Some operators quote a low base and add on afterwards.

The follow-up worth asking: "Is there any circumstance where I would pay more than the number you just gave me?" Listen carefully to any hesitation.

7. Who is actually showing up?

National franchises dispatch through a call centre. The person who quoted you may have no connection to the crew that arrives, and no ability to fix it if things go sideways.

Ask whether you can reach the same person after the job. With a local operator the answer is usually yes — with us it is the owner, on the number you called.

Three things that should end the call

And one thing that should not worry you

A company saying "I would need to see it." That is not evasion — it is the only honest way to give a firm number. The distinction is when the firm price arrives: before loading, or after.

Ask us all seven. Call (954) 536-8189. If the answers do not satisfy you, that is genuinely useful information, and you should call someone else.
