We would rather give you an honest comparison than pretend hiring us is always the right answer. For plenty of jobs it is not.
So here is the DIY dump run, costed properly.
What it actually involves
- Get a vehicle that can carry the load
- Load it yourself
- Drive to a transfer station
- Pay a disposal fee, usually by weight
- Unload it yourself
- Drive back
- Repeat, because it rarely fits in one trip
Each of those has a cost, and the ones people leave out are the ones that decide the comparison.
The vehicle
If you own a pickup, this is free and it changes the maths substantially. If you do not, you are renting.
Rental trucks are advertised at a low daily rate that is not the price. The actual cost is the day rate plus mileage plus fuel plus the insurance you will be offered at the counter. A realistic half-day with a rented pickup in Broward comes to considerably more than the headline figure.
The disposal fee
Transfer stations charge by weight, with a minimum. Some accept residential loads at set rates; some require an account.
Two things worth knowing before you drive over:
- Restricted items still apply. A refrigerator will not be accepted without the refrigerant recovered. Neither will tires at a general facility, or hazardous material. Discovering this with a loaded truck is a wasted morning.
- Opening hours are limited, and often not on the days you have free.
The trips
The most commonly underestimated variable.
A pickup bed holds far less than people picture. A garage clearout that we would take in one load is typically three or four pickup trips. Each trip is loading, driving, queuing, unloading, driving back.
Once you are on trip three on a Saturday afternoon in July, the calculation people actually make has changed.
Your own time
This is the honest crux and only you can price it.
A garage clearout done DIY is realistically most of a weekend day, sometimes two. It is physical work in South Florida heat, and it carries genuine injury risk on the heavy awkward items — which are precisely the items you are getting rid of.
If a Saturday is worth nothing to you, DIY wins on many jobs. If it is worth something, the comparison narrows quickly.
Where DIY genuinely wins
- Small loads. A few boxes and a chair. Take it yourself.
- You own a truck and the items are light and already accessible.
- No deadline and you are happy to do it over several weekends.
- Nothing restricted and nothing that needs two people.
For that profile, hiring anyone is spending money to avoid a mildly annoying afternoon. Save it.
Where it stops making sense
- Anything has to be carried from upstairs, an attic or a back yard
- Heavy awkward items — sofas, appliances, water heaters, hot tubs
- Restricted items a transfer station will refuse
- More than about two truck-bed loads
- A deadline — a closing, a tenant, an inspection
Our pricing runs $99 for a minimum load to around $599 for a full truck, labour and disposal included. Against a rented truck, disposal fees, fuel and most of a weekend, a half-truck job at $250 to $400 is often close to cost-neutral before your own time is counted at all.
And the free option we keep recommending
For a modest pile with no deadline that you can carry to the curb, municipal bulk collection is free and it works. We tell people this regularly and we mean it.
It stops working when the pile is large, urgent, restricted, or upstairs — which is when a hauler earns the money.
If you want a straight answer
Call (954) 536-8189 and describe the load. If the honest answer is that you should rent a truck for an afternoon, or put it at the curb, we will tell you that.
A number of our best customers first called about a job we told them not to hire us for.
