Appliance removal looks like the simplest thing we do and is regularly the most awkward. The unit is heavy, it lives in a slot with an inch of clearance, and roughly half the categories carry disposal rules that rule out every easy option.
Here is what is actually involved, by appliance.
Refrigerators and freezers
The most common call, and the most restricted.
Refrigerant has to be recovered by a certified processor before the unit is scrapped. That is federal EPA rule, enforced in Florida, and it is why municipal bulk crews leave fridges sitting at the curb.
Practically, a modern French-door unit is often 300 pounds or more, top-heavy, with no useful handholds. Before we arrive: empty it, take the shelves out, and defrost it if it has been running. A freezer full of ice becomes a freezer full of water across your floor at exactly the wrong moment.
Washers and dryers
Usually in a closet or a second-floor laundry room, which is the whole difficulty.
Washers hold residual water — worth running a spin cycle beforehand and disconnecting the hoses to drain them. We cap the water lines when we take it out. Gas dryers need the gas line disconnected by a licensed trade before we get there; electric is straightforward.
Ranges, ovens and dishwashers
Electric ranges unplug. Gas ranges need the supply shut off and disconnected properly — again, a licensed trade if it is hard-piped.
Dishwashers are the fiddly one: hard-plumbed, wired, and usually screwed to the underside of the counter. Not heavy, just slow.
Water heaters
Among the heaviest single objects in a house, and always in the worst possible place — a garage corner, a utility closet, occasionally an attic.
They must be drained first, which takes time. A 50-gallon tank holds over 400 pounds of water. Tell us on the call if it is in an attic; that changes the crew and the equipment.
AC units and air handlers
Window units, portable units, condensers and air handlers. All contain refrigerant, all subject to the same recovery requirement as refrigerators.
Window units are usually straightforward. Condensers and handlers are heavier and often need lines properly disconnected first.
What it costs
A single appliance normally sits inside our $99 minimum load. A kitchen swap where the fridge, range and dishwasher all go together is priced by total volume — usually somewhere in the $150 to $300 range, quoted on site before anything is lifted.
There is no stairs fee, and no surcharge for a difficult location.
Timing it around a delivery
A practical note that saves people money: if you are buying a replacement, ask about haul-away when you order. Most major retailers will take the old unit on delivery, sometimes free.
It only works on delivery day, for a like-for-like swap, with the old unit disconnected and accessible. Plenty of people miss that window — the delivery crew declines because the fridge is still full, or the swap is not like-for-like — and that is usually when they call us.

What happens to it
Refrigerant recovered by a licensed processor. Steel, copper and aluminium recovered and recycled — an appliance is mostly metal, and that metal goes back into circulation. Units still in genuine working order get offered for donation before anything else.
